  
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. He served from 1861-1865. He was born in a Kentucky log cabin and came from very humble beginnings. Just one month after he became President, the U.S. Civil War began between the North and the South. During the war, President Lincoln began the process of freeing the slaves by signing the Emancipation Proclamation. His most famous speech, the Gettysburg Address, lasted only 2 minutes but was known for its eloquence. Lincoln was the first president to be assassinated. He was shot by John Wilkes Booth while watching a play at Ford's Theater.
