Betsy Ross is credited with having designed the first American flag. In June 1777, General George Washington visited Betsy at her upholstery shop. He asked her to make a flag according to a sketch of a square flag with 13 six-pointed stars scattered in a blue field. Each star represented one of the 13 original colonies that became states in the new union. Betsy suggested that the flag be a rectangular shape, the stars have five points rather than six and the stars be arranged in a circle pattern. Betsy sewed this first flag and the design went into use. While many historians doubt Betsy Ross actually designed the flag, the legend lives on as a part of American folklore.
