Billy Yank was the nickname for the Union soldiers of the North who fought for the U.S. during the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. These soldiers included factory workers, immigrants and freed black slaves. Billy Yank wore a blue Union uniform with a flat cap called a kepi. He often carried 50 pounds of gear on his back, including a tent, blanket, canteen and spare socks. Other than the battles at Gettysburg and Antietem, most of the Civil War fighting was in the South. In the North and the South, the Civil War touched more American lives than any other war in history and led to the end of slavery. Over 3 million Americans fought in over 10,000 battles and skirmishes to decide America's future.
