During the Civil War nearly 200,000 African Americans served in the Union Army. After the war the U.S. Army formed four African American regiments of cavalry and infantry. Farmers, ex-slaves and Civil War veterans joined the Army and became Buffalo Soldiers. For two decades Buffalo Soldiers protected frontier settlers, escorted stagecoaches, built forts and patrolled unmapped lands. They struggled to be treated with equality by the Army and by settlers. Serving in desolate outposts, Buffalo Soldiers fought cattle rustlers, train robbers and Native American tribes who gave the Buffalo Soldiers their name. The buffalo was sacred to the Native Americans and the soldiers accepted the name as a badge of honor. Sergeant Brent Woods was one of 13 Buffalo Soldiers who received the Congressional Medal of Honor. He distinguished himself at an 1881 battle against the Apache in New Mexico Territory.
