A brave and remarkable freedom fighter, Harriet Tubman was born a Maryland slave. Her hatred of slavery fueled her courage. At the age of 29, Harriet gained her own freedom by hiding in a wagon and escaping to the North. She soon joined the Underground Railroad, a secret network that helped escaped slaves find their way to freedom. Harriet made 19 trips back into the South to lead over 300 runaway slaves to safe hiding places and on to freedom. On each trip she risked her own freedom to help others. Her trips became more and more dangerous as her fame grew. Slave owners offered a $40,000 reward for her capture. Using clever plans to outwit slave catchers, Harriet was never caught. For her heroism and strong leadership, she earned the nickname “Black Moses”. Harriet Tubman continued her freedom fighting during the Civil War, serving with the Union army as a spy.
