Inspired by the expansive midwest countryside, Wright created long horizontal buildings. Considered to be the quintessential Wright prairie house, the Robie House consists of two long rectangular, two-floor building sections and one short, box-like building section attached to each other by a large, centralized chimney. Built on a long, narrow (60’X180’) lot, Robie House is one of Wright’s last Prairie style designs. He used elongated Roman bricks to emphasize the horizontal lines of the Robie House. Ornamentation mimes the building’s horizontal sensibility through geometric window and door designs rendered in stained and leaded glass. Origin of name: Most of Wright’s residential designs are named for their original owners. Wright was commissioned in 1906 by Frederick C. Robie, a bicycle and motorcycle manufacturer, to design the Robie private residence. Original Architect: Frank Lloyd Wright. Date completed: 1909
