The Auditorium Building was designed to provide a home for the city’s cultural events. It was Adler and Sullivan’s first major commission. The modernist style building is composed of facades based on the Romanesque style of H.H. Richardson’s demolished Marshall Field Wholesale Store. The theatre seats an audience of 4,300. Original architects: Dankmar Adler and Louis H. Sullivan. Date Completed: 1889. Height: ten stories plus an eight story tower which was the highest point in the city at that time and housed Adler and Sullivan’s own offices.
