In 1869 the Washington Street traffic tunnel (1605 feet long) was the first Chicago tunnel completed and designed to relieve congestion and traffic jams that occurred when the Chicago River bridges were raised to allow for boat with high masts to pass. The LaSalle Street Tunnel (2000 feet long) was completed next – shortly before the Chicago Fire of 1871 and relieved traffic problems as well as providing an additional escape route for those fleeing the growing inferno that began on the near south side. Both tunnels are now closed to traffic. Our image shows the trolley cars emerging south from the LaSalle Street tunnel in 1905.
