South Water Street is one of the oldest streets in Chicago. It ran along the south bank of the Chicago River from Fort Dearborn to the Forks. Businesses expanded following the river bend to Dearborn and then to State. The market was notorious for its signature atmosphere - hustle-bustle and frenzied, animated buying and selling - in turn of the 19th century Chicago. Residents and visitors alike could find everything imaginable at South Water Street. The subsequent congestion created by the increased volume of car and pedestrian traffic was unbearable. Daniel Burnham’s 1909 Plan of Chicago proposed a solution which included transplanting the South Water Street Market from the heart of Chicago’s business district to the west side. In 1925, the market moved and Wacker Drive (Upper and Lower) eventually ran the route of the former South Water Street market.
