The first Chicago “L” operated in May of 1892 for a test run for invited guests. The tracks ran south from Congress Street to 39th Street. A year later the track was extended to Jackson Park to encourage World’s Columbian Exposition visitors to use public transportation to attend the world’s fair. Independent railway companies operated the South Side, Lake Street, West Side and Northwestern lines until the mid-20th century when the city united the elevated trains and bus systems under one roof as the CTA (Chicago Transit Authority.) The station at Van Buren is one of the “L” stations in Chicago’s Loop – the downtown business district framed on the north, east, south and west by the elevated train tracks on Lake Street, Wabash Avenue, Van Buren and Wells Streets.
