Potter Palmer, who in 1852 owned and operated Chicago’s finest dry goods store on Lake Street, sold most of his interest in the store in January 1865 to two young merchants, Marshall Field and Levi S. Leiter. A year later Field and Leiter bought the rest of Palmer’s interest in the store and renamed the store. Field, Leiter and Company was the forerunner of Marshall Field & Co. as we know it today.
Field and Leiter opened their State Street store on October 12, 1868. By 1871, thirty new stores had been built on the new boulevard and State Street was on its way to becoming one of the world’s greatest shopping districts.
The clocks on the corners of the flagship store on State Street are icons of the Marshall Field’s store identity. Normal Rockwell immortalized the Marshall Field’s clocks in one of his paintings.
