The grand Michigan Avenue Bridge and double-level Wacker Drive development were part of Daniel Burnham’s 1909 Plan of Chicago intended to improve traffic congestion and to beautify the Chicago River and surroundings. The bridge, a double-leaf, double-deck trunion bascule bridge, was completed in 1920. The four bridge towers, which feature sculptures of events in the city’s history, were added in 1928. Upper Wacker Drive and the lower floors of the London Guarantee and Accident Building can be seen across the top of the image. EEC
