  
The General Motors exhibit at the Century of Progress Exposition told the story of the impact automotive engineering had on our civilization. A complete automotive assembly plant was the major component of the building’s displays. Other exhibits in the General Motors Building included stories of color and light, engine telemetry and combustion, and strength testing for different steel formulae.
A Century of Progress International Exposition was held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Chicago. Its theme (from the fair’s planning documents) was to “attempt to demonstrate to an international audience the nature and significance of scientific discoveries, the methods of achieving them, and the changes which their application has wrought in industry and in living conditions.” The fair was held on 427 acres on Lake Michigan just south the Chicago’s downtown where Northerly Island (aka Meigs Field) and McCormick Place today. A Century of Progress officially opened on May 27, 1933 and closed on November 12 of that year. Due in part to its public popularity and as an effort to retire incurred debts, the fair reopened on May 26, 1934 and closed October 31, 1934.
