Photograph, 1910

Bridges are integral to the history and development of Chicago. Today, the main branch of the Chicago River is home to eight bridges connecting the city north to the city south at Franklin, Wells, LaSalle, Clark, Dearborn, State Street, Wabash, Michigan, Columbus and Lake Shore Drive until it meets with Lake Michigan. This photograph shows the bridges at State and Rush Streets around the turn of the century. The Rush Street bridge (in the distance) was a swing bridge and was probably the last bridge to cross at Rush. The Rush Street Bridge was demolished when the bridge over Michigan Avenue was completed around 1920. EEC
