Sacagawea was a remarkable young Native American woman. She joined Lewis and Clark on the first organized expedition across America to the Pacific Ocean. Sacagawea was a Shoshone who had been kidnapped as a child by another tribe. From 1805 to 1806, she traveled with the famous expedition with her newborn baby, Pompe, in a cradleboard on her back. Facing grizzly bears, rattlesnakes and freezing cold, the group journeyed 6,000 miles by foot, horseback and canoe. Sacagawea helped buy horses and guide the group of 30 men through the Rocky Mountains. When they met other tribes, she made peace and interpreted for the expedition. With her skills and courage, Sacagawea made it possible for Lewis and Clark to reach their goal.
