Thomas Jefferson was the third President of the United States, serving from 1801-1809. He is perhaps best known as the author of the Declaration of Independence, which he drafted at the age of 33 as a member of the Continental Congress. On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted and the war for freedom, the American Revolution, had begun. Jefferson was a man of many talents including architecture, science and music. In 1803, President Jefferson expanded the country by negotiating the purchase of vast lands in the western U.S. from the French in the Louisiana Purchase. The following year he sent Lewis and Clark on their famous expedition to explore these lands.
